The thirst of the parched land

·
It gazed up at the sky,
waiting for the rain,
its mouth wide open
to quench the thirst within.
No drop did it feel
as it helplessly gazed
waiting,waiting and waiting.
The clouds drifted lazily,
indifferent to its thirst.
"Shower thy rain!"
its heart screamed
in a voice unheard.
Its soul bled,
its eyes burned
as it waited and waited
for the rain to come.
A lone bird flew in the sky
humming a tuneless song.
Why?Oh! Why?
does not the rain come?
It heaved a sigh
its throat on fire.
Shamelessly it cried
in vain for its unfulfilled desire.
It closed its eyes
waiting to breathe its last
when suddenly
from the depths of heavens,
a lone drop fell
on its dry parched lips
and it smiled.
